What Should You Do If Bitten By An Animal?

Any time an animal bites a person, there is a danger that the animal is infected with rabies.

If you have been bitten the following precautions should be taken:

  • Notify your local animal control authority or law enforcement agency.
  • Identify if the animal is owned and by whom. Dogs and cats may be quarantined and observed for a period of ten days.
  • If you were bitten by a wild animal it may need to be submitted to a laboratory testing.
  • Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and hot water as a first aid procedure.
  • Consult a physician as soon as possible to determine whether anit-rabies treatment is needed.
