On Friday, May 15, 2009, the 4th annual Kendall County Sheriff's Office Bike Rodeo was held in conjuction with the Comfort Elementary Health Fair. Kendall County Sheriff's Office set up a 7 course event for the children to ride through. Students brought their own bikes to ride through the course.
Students are taught safety techniques, such as looking out for traffic, stopping at all curb or roads and looking before crossing, stopping and starting safely as well as how to avoid objects in their path.
Comfort Middle School teacher, Melissa Dunbar and her students assisted with guiding the children through the courses. Principal Angeli Willson and Vice Principal Robert McConnell were on hand for the rodeo.
Deputy Cindy Caasi headed up the rodeo with help from several members of the Kendall County Sheriff's Office, Citizen's Sheriff's Academy Volunteers, Boerne EMS, and Comfort's Volunteer Fire Department, some teachers and parents of the rodeo riders also volunteered.
All bike riders received a numbered registration license that was placed on the bike by the deputies. Those registrations are then kept at the Kendall County Sheriff's Office in the event the bike is ever lost or stolen and recovered, it would be readily identified and returned to the owner.
The 57 participants in the bike safety course received a certificate of completion signed by Sheriff Roger Duncan. "I would like to thank all the participants, teachers, principals and volunteers for making this year's bike rodeo a great success".
Sheriff Roger Duncan donated two mongoose bicycles that were awarded to Adrian Olague and Ozlynne Martinez from a random drawing at the end of the event.
